Abstract

Objective: to analyze steatotic liver disease associated with metabolic dysfunction and its relationship with ultrasonographic findings. Literature Review: Fatty liver disease associated with metabolic dysfunction (MASLD) is a new term that reflects the association of this disease with metabolic risk factors, such as obesity and diabetes. Noninvasive methods, such as ultrasonography and elastography, are replacing liver biopsy in its diagnosis, monitoring, and stratification. Ultrasonography remains the main imaging method for screening MASLD, allowing subjective grading of steatosis into three levels: grade 1 (mild), grade 2 (moderate), and grade 3 (severe). Elastography methods, whether transient (FibroScan), shear wave (p-SWE and 2D-SWE) or magnetic resonance, measure liver stiffness, allowing identification and stratification of fibrosis. Among them, magnetic resonance elastography is the most accurate. Final considerations: Given the growth and repercussions of MASLD, early screening of patients at risk and stratification of the disease for appropriate management are important to avoid unfavorable progressions, such as significant and advanced fibrosis. Ultrasonography, in particular, is essential in screening for MASLD, while elastography plays a prominent role in stratifying liver fibrosis.
