Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the nasopharyngeal space and its correlation with malocclusions and cephalometric variables in young patients. Methods: It was an observational and retrospective study, whose data were collected from 79 orthodontic documentation and study models, from patients between 8 and 21 years old. The limits of the nasopharyngeal space, present in the lateral radiographs, were transcribed using ultrafan paper and graphite. The data were recorded in a form made specifically for this purpose and later distributed in tables, where analytical statistics were applied through the Chi-square test (p <0.05). Results: In 1.4% of the sample, adenoids were present; 2.8% had partial atrophy, 36.6% almost total atrophy; and 58.9% absence of adenoids. The average age was 14.82 years. As for malocclusions, the highest prevalence was dental crowding, with 24.3%. Regarding the other variables, the most prevalent were: female gender (49%); feoderma pattern (38%); absence of dental anomaly (97.5); absence of tooth loss (60%); Molar class I (65%); Canine Class I (37%); Standard I (46%); and convex profile (42%). Conclusion: There was no correlation between the variations in the size of the nasopharyngeal spaces, the malocclusions and the other variables studied.
