Abstract
Objective: To investigate self-reported morbidities among public school teachers in a medium-sized Brazilian municipality. Methods: An Epidemiological survey with Elementary School teachers distributed in different schools of the State education network in the urban area was conducted. The sample type was probabilistic by conglomerates in a single stage (schools). A total amount of 760 teachers were assessed in 35 different schools. For data collection, a self-applicable questionnaire was used, containing variables regarding self-reported morbidity. The figures were analyzed through descriptive statistics by the software Statical Package for Social Science (SPSS), version 18.0. Results: Among the interviewed teachers, 85% of them reported some sort of morbidity, and 13.8% reported having 6 or more different coexisting morbidities. Ocular problems had the highest prevalence (40%), followed by mental health problems (27.6%), migraine and labyrinthitis (25.7%), high cholesterol (23.8%) and hypertension (17.4%). Conclusion: The prevalence of self-reported morbidities among public school teachers was high. Preventive measures in the field of public health should be reaffirmed for a better quality of life and working conditions among teachers.
