Abstract

Objective: To analyze the perception of family members of hospitalized children regarding the continuity of education or pedagogical monitoring in the hospital environment. Methods: This is a descriptive study with a quantitative and qualitative approach, carried out in a hospital in the state of Paraíba. Data collection was performed through questionnaires with closed questions and interviews with six family members, which were audio-recorded and later transcribed. The analysis resulted in two categories: the (in)visibility of the educational situation of hospitalized children and the awakening to hospital education. Results: Thirty children participated, 23 (76.7%) males and 07 (23.3%) females, with an average age of 9 years and an average length of hospitalization of 10 days. Leukemia was the most prevalent disease (33%). It was observed that 25 (86.2%) children were regularly enrolled in their school years, but only 11 (36.7%) received pedagogical support during hospitalization and 19 (63.3%) did not receive such support. Conclusion: Schooling in the hospital environment is still a challenge, requiring greater integration between health and education. It is essential that hospitals promote educational actions that guarantee the continuity of the learning process of hospitalized children.
