Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the quality of life in adults and elderly, trauma victims, submitted to total and partial hip arthroplasty in a tertiary hospital. Methods: An analysis of the medical records was performed in relation to: sex, age, affected side and type of hip arthroplasty. Quality of life was assessed using the Short-Form Health Survey-36 (SF-36) questionnaire. Results: 103 patients underwent hip arthroplasty, of which 57 patients were included in the survey and 86% (n=49) underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA). Most patients were female (64.9%, n=37) and mean age was 73 years. The mental health, social aspects, general health status and vitality domains had the highest mean scores. On the other hand, the physical limitation, pain, functional capacity and emotional limitation domains were the dimensions considered most compromised. When comparing the groups submitted to THA and partial hip arthroplasty, a significant difference (p<0.05) was observed in the mental health and vitality domains. Conclusion: Most patients undergoing hip arthroplasty in a tertiary hospital are elderly, female and have a low quality of life after surgery.
