Abstract
Objective: To know the characteristics of patients affected by COVID-19 (GC) compared to the profile of CLINICAL non-COVID patients (GCNC) treated at the emergency unit (EUU) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Cross-sectional observational study carried out at the UEU, from July 2020 to June 2021. For comparisons between the GC and GCNC groups, Student's t-test and Mann-Whitney test were used. Results: 7590 patients were evaluated during the period, of which 50% were female and 63% were aged between 50-89 years. Most patients required hospitalization (84.2%), but the length of stay was longer among GC patients (8 days) compared to GCNC patients (5 days) (p<0.0001). Tomography was the most requested exam for GC (55.4% versus 36.9%, p<0.001). The analysis of mortality between the groups showed higher rates in the CG when compared to the GCNC (22% versus 10.1%, p<0.001) and the peak of deaths in the CG occurred in March 2021. Conclusion: The analysis of attendances, showed that patients with COVID-19 were hospitalized longer and died more than non-COVID patients. However, these rates were similar to countries with better per capita income.
