Abstract

Objective: To report the adjustments in the use of Personal Protective Equipment and in the work process of a Material and Sterilization Center in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Experience report: This is an experience report of residents of Perioperative Nursing. The study site was a Material and Sterilization Center of a University Hospital that was a reference for the treatment of COVID-19. Initially, there was an immersion in the scientific literature about biosafety during the pandemic. At the same time, a Standard Operating Procedure for wearing biosecurity attire and disposing of was developed, which covered professionals who worked in all stages of material processing. In the sequence, practical training was carried out, flowcharts were elaborated with the described steps and a video was made available on the hospital's intranet. Final considerations: The practical training strategy ensured more safety for workers involved in indirect assistance to patients with COVID-19. In this way, it was possible to maintain the production and quality of the materials provided by the Material and Sterilization Center to the other sectors of the hospital and to reduce occupational risks.
