Difficulties in maternal breastfeeding in the maternity of the holy foundation casa de misericórdia do Pará and the support of bank of milk

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the difficulties in breastfeeding in 50 puerperas at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia Maternity Hospital and the support received from the Milk Bank. METHODOLOGY: This is a descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study. The work was carried Maternity of the Holy House of Misericórdia Pará Foundation in the puerperal wards. RESULTS: The difficulty in breastfeeding was found to be non-milk wheezing, followed by inverted nipple bilaterally, nipple fissure and difficulty in sucking. The age of the puerperal women was 25.54 years; from urban areas, living in capital of Para, had studied high school, had a partner, had not planned the present pregnancy, had a primigravida, had had prenatal care with 6 or more consultations, and at some point had been talked about breastfeeding. The majority had their babies by cesarean section, with delivery without problems, being the average life of the neonates at the time of the research of 36.64 hours. All the patients intend to breastfeed their children under this management, and most of them know the importance of breastfeeding and believe that it can be in an exclusive regime for at least 6 months. All the puerperas had already received assistance from the milk bank and most of them felt safe after such support. CONCLUSION: Breastfeeding is a very important process in the development of mother and baby, and identifying what makes this process more difficult is essential for adequate care. In this sense, milk banks are the main asset in reference hospitals such as the study.
